F.A.Q.

We bid all projects by the job and not by the hour. We find that bidding by the job works best for our client base. Bidding by the job gives our client a good starting point in terms of their ability to budget as well as helps alleviate any speed vs. quality conflicts.

When a client first contacts us with a repair list, typically we will first go over the list of items by phone. During this initial conversation we will ask a few questions, such as the age & style of the home, where the home is located and the expected time of completion. After all the pertinent information is documented, we will then schedule a convenient time for us to come out and do a site visit. While some contractors and repair services bid jobs by phone, we choose not follow that practice. At The House Surgeon we realize that no two jobs are the same, and in fairness to the client, we prefer to give the most accurate bid possible.

After an estimate for the work has been completed, we will contact the client by phone to discuss the estimate in detail. If the client elects to move forward, we will then document the proposed work and all pertinent information into our standard agreement.

We had the pleasure of working on an old colonial home that had quite a bit of extensive plaster damage as well as damaged ornate moldings. After several attempts to locate the moldings through salvage houses and online brokers, the decision was made to fabricate the trim out of new stock. After repairing the damaged walls & ceiling, which turned out beautifully. We then put quite a bit of time into painstakingly recreating historically accurate moldings. By following this process, we were able to achieve a near perfect match by routing and shaping new trim stock to match the existing moldings. That said, no period accurate trim would be historically accurate without a little distressing, so we ensured that that those important details were also included. The results of the match were completely undetectable, and the owners were ecstatic. For our team I can confidently say, that its projects that invoke our creativity, and ability to problem solve that we are typically most fond of. It took about two weeks to complete that particular project.

Follow your gut. If you feel that something is not right, then it probably isn't. There is the potential for you to be working with this person or company for an extended amount of time. It is of paramount importance that you feel comfortable with your partnership. It is also equally important that he or she is an effective communicator. Prior to the start of your project; your contractor should take the time to iron out how and when they plans to update you, as well as how frequently. During the progression of a project, you should always be in the loop.
